On a clear Tuesday morning, the world changed very fast. It was September 11, 2001. People call this day “9/11” because of the date. It started as a normal day, but it ended up being a day no one would ever forget.
A group of terrorists took control of four airplanes they did not want to fly to an airport. Instead, they used the planes to hit big, famous buildings on purpose. They wanted to hurt the United States and make people feel afraid.
The first two planes hit the Twin Towers in New York City. These were two of the tallest buildings in the world. When the planes hit, they caused big fires and a lot of black smoke. People everywhere watched the news and felt very sad.
A third plane hit a building called the Pentagon. This building is near Washington, D.C., and it is where the military leaders work. This attack caused more damage and showed that the terrorists were trying to hit many different places.
The fourth plane crashed in a big grassy field in Pennsylvania. The people on that plane were courageous, they tried to stop the terrorists from hitting another city. Because they fought back, the plane crashed in the grass where no one else was hurt.
In New York City, the Twin Towers were hurt so badly that they fell down. When the buildings fell, a huge cloud of grey dust covered the streets. It was a very scary moment for all the people who were nearby.
Even though it was a bad day, many heroes helped, like firefighters and police officers ran into the smoke to save people. They worked hard to help others get out of the buildings safely, but sadly, almost 3,000 people died that day. These people were from many different countries. Families lost their moms, dads, and friends. The whole country felt a lot of pain and said many prayers for the people who were gone.
After the attacks, people tried to be very kind to each other. They gave blood at hospitals and shared food with those who needed it. Even though a bad event happened, it brought people together to help one another stay strong. Today, travel is different because of 9/11; there are more rules at the airport to make sure everyone stays safe on planes. We also have special parks to remember the people who died. We talk about 9/11 every year so we never forget to show bravery and kindness.
