Phones have been illegal in Texas for about a year now, and it’s made a pretty big impact on both teachers and students. Many students were upset by the news on phones being illegal, but why did this law make students upset? Because if teachers were already strict on phones, adding a law onto that wouldn’t make them mad, or make the situation better, would it?
But this isn’t only about students and how they feel but teachers also get to have a say in this. According to a teacher from Sachse High, “having to pick up phones puts more work onto our shoulders.” Which proves how teachers also find this new law a little aggravating. Another teacher states that, “the phone law has not kept students from being on their phones, I have caught many of my students checking or being on their phones and taking up phones is not something I like to do.” Which is a very reasonable statement because many teachers find it tiring having to pay close attention to who is using their phone and who isn’t, mainly because school is meant to learn, and learning is being hindered. Even so teachers’ jobs is to keep an eye on the students, the students’ themselves should also take responsibility for their learning and be mindful of the laws that help them with this.
Students could have gained really bad habits ever since this new law has been made. Bad habits as in being secretive and also maybe even the feeling of being startled from having to sneak your phone from someone can be taken to any outside environments. Being secretive isn’t a good thing because you’re constantly lying about what you’re doing.
Many teachers can be understanding about the transition about phones, they will just give students a warning the first time they are caught, however, as the year has progressed not many teachers are this way, and especially not administrators!
At Sachse High, once you end up getting your phone taken more than once you have to pay. Students are very upset about this rule, and as a student myself, I agree with the way students may feel about this. It isn’t a reasonable rule to have to pay to get what you own back. A student at Sachse High claims this rule is “dumb”, and many students would agree on that as well.
At the end of the day, the new law has made students grow into bad habits, put more work onto teachers shoulders and has upset many but unfortunately, there isn’t much to do to change the law!
