Many students at Sachse don’t trust the water from the water fountains, but do they have a reason to? Out of the 38 staff; half trusted that the water was safe to drink. Out of 21 students; none trusted that the water was safe to drink.
Assistant Principal Mr. Varrassi said that he trusts the water, but “I don’t trust the bacteria,” we did not test the water for any bacteria.
We tested the water for anything that could cause a weird taste or health problems. What we found was high levels of sodium chloride, also known as table salt. The average level of sodium chloride around all fountains was about 243 parts per million (ppm). While 243 ppm is okay, above 250 is when the water starts to get a salty taste.
A pH of 6 is similar to milk, while a pH of 9 is similar to baking soda. The difference between pH levels is either ten times more, or ten times less.
The fountains were sorted from left to right with left being the first fountain. Fountains that didn’t work were skipped and aren’t included in the Google Sheet.
The best fountains in terms of water quality are none of them, because all of the fountains have at least one quality outside of the okay range. The best fountains in terms of taste are the 240s 1, 100s, 150s 3, Annex, Cafeteria 1 and 2, Gym 2 and 4, and Boys Locker 3. All of these fountains should have high pressure and be cool.
