If you followed the 2018-2019 Sachse Mustang volleyball team you saw magic on the court, then heartbreak in the playoffs. The Mustangs come into the 2019-2020 season off a 39-7 total record.

Sophomore Emily Westbrook, who is going into her second year on the varsity volleyball team as the setter, has high expectations for the team this year.

“We have a lot of team chemistry the bond that we have built with each other practicing every day and being there for each other will lead us farther,” Westbrook said.

Last year the Mustangs only lost one district game to Wylie and the rematch is Friday, Sept. 20, at Wylie. District play for the Lady Mustangs starts Sept. 13 at an away game against South Garland

“We had a crazy game against Wylie,” Westbrook said.  “It went to four sets and was close all the way through. If we would have gotten another bounce here and there we might have won that game.  I really look forward to that rematch this season, and hopefully we come out with a win this year.”

The Mustangs had a really strong team last year and plan to show their competition they are still here to win. Westbrook said she expects nothing but improvement and to be close to undefeated.

“Alicia Hearn is by far one of the biggest leaders on our team,” Westbrook said. “She always makes the team feel welcome, and her love for the game and our team shines through.”

The Mustangs have started the year by playing out of district tournaments. The most recent tournament, Volleypalooza in San Antonio, ended with the Lady Mustangs winning three games and losing four.

The Lady Mustangs lost to highly ranked state teams Clark, Weatherford and Westlake.

“We played some top teams in Volleypalooza,” Westbrook said. “We ended up not doing as good as we hoped, but we can learn from some of the losses and build into the remainder of the season.”The Mustangs have set high expectations for themselves and fans should be ready for a competitive 2019-2020 district season..
