There have been at least 91 mass shootings this year, one recently being at Florida State University on April 17th. It was also at least the 27th school shooting in 2025. There have also been eight school shootings in the United States, and that number is likely to grow. The number of shootings and gun violence this year is growing increasingly high.
Some reasons for the increase in shootings are political issues, mental health struggles, and the fact that people have easier access to firearms. These are all major causes for school shootings and mass shootings in general. After the pandemic, gun violence has become much more common than you might think. 2022 was one of the deadliest years, with 47 deaths and even more injuries. Adults and educators need to work together to decrease the dangers that schools face. School is supposed to be a safe and healthy environment for both students and educators, but the reality is the opposite.
The IDs that all members of our school need to wear are important and valuable in helping prevent danger and possible shootings. Another way to possibly decrease the number of shootings, especially in schools, is to realize when students could potentially be a threat to others or if their mental health is suffering, especially with thoughts of gun violence. People who could pose a threat to the community need to seek guidance from a trusted adult and understand that school shootings are a very dangerous matter.
Most of the time, the people who cause shootings take the firearms from someone they know or more likely from their home. Adults need to keep younger adults and children away from guns at home, if they have any, because they’re not something to be messed with or something to joke about. Teaching students and others about the dangers of firearm usage is a good way to help prevent shootings.
Another way to put a stop to shootings is to look for any threats or warning signs coming from an individual (or group of people). From documented cases of shootings, there have been signs and indications of something terrible happening in the near future. By paying attention to every detail and watching out for any threats, shootings and gun violence can likely be decreased.
Guns are a major cause of death among citizens in the United States, as well as other regions of the world, and many children die every day because of gun violence, especially in the most recent years. Preventing school shootings as well as mass shootings in general is necessary for kids and adults to have a safer and better future.
