Everybody knows the infamous dress up days that lead to the most memorable days, HOCO and Prom. Some weeks, the school will randomly throw out a dress up week that has rarely any participation because the themes are so basic. I mean how many times am I going to throw on a cowboy hat and call myself a “cowboy”? It gets repetitive, and admittedly boring. Which is why we, as a student body, should be able to put in our 50 cents in, not just participating but creating. Creating the themes throughout the week, which could lead to a lot of good outcomes.
I believe that the school should let the student body create and vote on themes that would take place during the week.
First off, this could be an opportunity for students to show their creativity through the theme they create or choose to present.
Second, it would lead to more relevant themes. It can include trends that the students know, and relate too, instead of a teacher trying to think like students and failing miserably.
Lastly, it can make the repetitive days better. It’s so much fun dressing up for school in a costume then just a hoodie and sweatpants.
Alivia, a senior in high school said, “Voting and choosing can show creativity through a theme and many people love dressing up and looking silly with their friends.” It also allows the students to think outside the box with themes that are good enough to get enough from a lot of the students. It takes a lot of creative thinking to create an extra, but not too extra, and a basic, but not too basic theme that the whole school can participate in and be happy.
Second off…, let’s be real, sometimes the themes the teachers pick are so basic or very old, and because they are trying a tad bit hard sometimes, they can create some very bad themes that seem forced to fit in with today’s culture. But, the students know what their classmates are actually interested in, and on apps that all capture our attention, which makes it easier to create themes. This engagement can also lead to more participation within the school because the kids are now participating in the themes that they voted or created! And the school is all always so big on participation and engagement that they even started bribing people with PJ day, but why bribe when you can just let their creativity shine through dress up days?
Lastly, Emma Beasley, a freshmen said that “It would make the school a lot more interesting and spontaneous which can make boring days a lot better.” It would also give themselves something to look forward to during the semesters that nothing exciting happens. It keeps the students on their toes, constantly looking for the week that they can showcase their talents when it comes to fashion and keeping with the theme.
Yeah, I know that some people will be against it or not participate, and maybe some kids will take advantage of it and try to put inappropriate themes in to be voted for. Yeah, but, the school can easily take those votes out or put restrictions and rules into the voting process as well as the creating process. I mean a few rules will never hurt to keep some people out. Additionally, in everything, some people will just choose not to participate but if the majority is doing it, then why care about the few who refuse to put a tad bit more effort into their outfits?
So, in conclusion, I believe that the school should let the student body create and vote on themes that would take place during the week.
But, to the people who don’t agree and refuse to participate, they don’t have too. Every Spirit Week/day is optional and is really for the students who love school spirit and dressing up for no reason what-so-ever. If some people don’t participate that is fine, but there will be a bunch more who have been waiting for a moment to put in their participation for dress up weeks. Also, it doesn’t have to be every week, it can be once a month or every two months, it doesn’t have to be constant or often it just has to be student made and voted upon.
So…do you wanna participate?
