The background: The Menu is a horror comedy released in 2022 written by Seth Reiss and Tracy and directed by Mark Mylod. It made 79.6 million dollars at the box office with a budget of 30 million it made around 49.6 million dollars. the menu explores the food industry, media, and culture, and the problems within them the movie highlights issues like sexual harassment, chef worship, and the snobbery of the wealthy.

Plot: The menu is about rich people who go to this private restaurant called Hawthorne on a private island owned by a celebrity chef named Jullian.2 of the guests are a rich guy named Tyler and the other person is his date Margot. All the other guests include a food editor named Lillian and her editor, 3 business partners, an ex-movie star and his assistant, and a very wealthy married couple Richard and Anne who have been there multiple times. They all get to the island by boat and Julian’s assistant, Elsa, gives them all a tour. 

During the tour, Elsa looks at Margot and is like she’s not the person that was on your list because Tyler apparently was supposed to bring another woman but then brought Margot at the last minute. Then dinner starts and it’s just like super showy foods like one dish is just a bunch of sauces on a plate and Margot like all confused and is wondering what am I supposed to do with this and now each course that is being served by the chef is delivering monologues to go along with it, and they’re getting like weirder and more unsettling and for the 3rd course all the guests have something revealed through these laser printed tortillas. So the 3 business guys are exposed for the fact that they have been laundering money.

 So everyone got very confused and then during the 4th course one of the sous chefs killed himself in front of everybody. So now Richard the husband is like screw this and tries to leave but then they cut off his ring finger and they’re like you guys are not going anywhere. Hawthorne’s main investor is then drowned and killed in front of all the guests. Then the 5th course comes out and we meet Catherine. Catherine is an employee of Julian that he admits to sexually harassing. So in return, he allows her to stab him not fatally though. 

So then Catherine stays inside with all the women while all the men are allowed to run off and escape, but of course, they don’t intend for anyone to escape so the staff catch them all. But while the women are inside, Lillian, who’s the food critic, says to Catherine like, if you get us out

of this I’ll help you open your own restaurant, and Catherine is like, well why would I do that, I’m the one who came up with this whole idea.

so then Jullian explains to everybody why they’re here and it is basically because they all in some way have contributed to him losing his passion for cooking, so like the food critic is one of them because they gave him bad reviews, the couple that comes here all the time like it’s just an everyday thing and they don’t even appreciate it anymore and he tells everybody that they are all going to be dead by the end of the night including himself, the chef and all of his staff, the chef pulls Margot aside and is like listen you weren’t supposed to be here, so i’m going to give you the option to either die with everybody else or die with the staff. Margot doesn’t answer because the whole thing is crazy and the chef is like ok you’re going to die with the staff. 

and now it’s revealed to us that Margot’s name is Aaron and she is an escort who was paid to come here with Tyler earlier, she and Richard recognized each other, and because Richard hired Margot as an escort, but she stopped seeing Richard when he wanted her to act like his daughter. and it also revealed that Tyler knew this whole thing was going to happen, he knew the plan was that everybody was going to be killed. He kept it a secret and still hired Margot to go with him anyway because singles are not allowed at the restaurant, so you can tell throughout this whole movie that Tyler is obsessed with Chef Jullian. So now Jullian to Tyler is since you’re so obsessed with me and my craft, how about you come in the kitchen and show me your skills then Tyler fails miserably and is completely made fun of by the chef and he whispers something in tylers ear that we don’t hear and tyler just walks off. 

So Jullian asks Margot to go to a different building to get something that he needs for dessert, and as she going to do so, she walks by a closet and sees Tyler hanging on the way to the other building, she also breaks into Julians house to try and find like a phone or something like that. While she is there she is attacked by Elsa. A fight breaks out between the 2 of them, but Margot ends up stabbing and killing Elsa.on the wall, she sees a framed employee of the month award of Jullian as a young fry cook. In the picture he is super young, making cheeseburgers in a diner, and he looks very happy. She also finds a radio and manages to call for help.so she gets back to the main building, and a little while later, her call for help goes through and a Coast Guard named Dale arrives.

 Everyone is super happy because they think they’re saved. Then it’s revealed Dale is a line cook and just goes back to the kitchen.now dessert is being prepared, which is the last course, and Margot gets smart. She calls out Jullian for his loveless cooking and is like after all this she’s still very hungry. And then Julians like well what would you like? And margots like a cheeseburger and she doesn’t want a fancy cheeseburger, she just wants a cheeseburger and fries.

And Jullian does it and while he is making the burger you can see he finds joy in making it and starts to love cooking again. so he brings the cheeseburger to Margot. She takes a bite and is like this is the best cheeseburger she’s ever had. Then she says she likes to take it to go and it works.Julian lets her leave with the burger. and she gets into a Coast Guard boat and leaves.

Meanwhile, the rest of the guests are left to have dessert, which is a fancy smores dish they are all dressed as smores and they all accept their fate as Jullain sets them all on fire and they all die.the last shot is Margot driving away on the boat as she eats her cheeseburger and watches the restaurant burn.     

My review: I enjoyed this movie because it was funny yet scary at the same time and it also brought alot of attention to stuff like sexual harassment, gluttony, rage, and a bunch of other stuff some people hate it because it shows realistic stuff that happens in the world but that’s the point of the movie its point is to show all this horrible stuff in an entertaining way where people would want to see it and see all this horrible stuff that’s happening and try and figure out a way how to stop it .
