Gracie, a senior in high school, is talking about the use of run time. She states that she wants run time to be something more productive for the students, especially those who need help in specific subjects,
I agree with this suggestion. First, run time is usually when everyone is on their phone, wasting time because some teachers have either stated that they can’t stay for run time or aren’t here. Next, no one does anything in run time, meaning the twenty-five minutes we’re in that class we’re just wasting time and we could be using that time to master specific subjects. Lastly, if the students can’t get to school early in the morning or stay in after school tutorials, run time is the perfect time to go to their teacher’s classroom and get the extra teaching they need to be successful.
There was a time when I was struggling with a certain assignment in Algebra, and I couldn’t stay during Run TIme because, according to my teacher, “There is a rule regarding having tutorials during run time.”. I feel like there shouldn’t be a single reason as to why we are not using these 25 minutes for tutoring or teaching purposes.
Yes, I know some teachers might disagree because some students ask and go to another teacher and not do anything, or they say one place, but they go to the other. Yes, but some students genuinely need help and can’t get it because they have to stay in a classroom that doesn’t do anything but waste their time. Also, teachers talk, and they will be quick to tell you where a student is going and maybe recommend keeping an eye on them.
So, in conclusion I agree with this suggestion. I think what we should do is assign all the students run time but let them go to their teachers for specific subjects. If they don’t need the help, then they have the choice to stay in their class, but if they genuinely need help, then they should tell their teacher and go to the teacher of that subject. Don’t lock them into a classroom and make them waste 25 minutes when they could be using that time to understand certain topics.
