Should Garland Independent School Districts convert to a 4 day school week? Over the course of 2022-2023, 27 districts across the states have implemented the 4 day school week. Over 1,600 schools across 24 states, according to an article published by Education finance and policy. A lot of schools are losing teachers because of the 4 day school week. Many teachers say that they have too much work and move to other schools that have the 4 day school week to take a break.
Mineral Wells ISD dealt with this exact problem. They started losing their teachers to neighboring districts because of the 4 day school week. They decided to start converting to the 4 day school week, and things have improved since then.
A teacher from Mineral Wells ISD stated “Last year we were on a nine period day from 8:09 – 4:10” “We now go from 8:10 – 4:20 on an eight day period”. He said the extra 10 minutes that he has with his class really helped. “I can teach a lesson and start an assignment and help them instead of just assigning a homework lesson that they may not do”. This shows that teachers and students both benefit from this new rule. Teachers and students will feel more energized for next week just by missing friday. It allows everyone to take a break from work and just relax, or Spend time with friends and family.
Students and teachers have the opportunity to run errands and focus on themselves with the day off. We can only work so much, so we deserve a break. We wouldn’t have to stress about not having enough time to do certain things outside of school. We would have the chance to do things that we can’t usually do because of the 4 day school week. Cynthia Wise, a student in Dekalb ISD, said“ I feel more refreshed on Mondays. I believe that I get more work done”
