Bowling team strikes through competition
January 28, 2019
The bowling team has built an empire as one of the top teams in the state. This year they hope to continue their dominance against the Dallas East Bowling District.
The Dallas East Bowling District is a non-UIL recognized group. The six teams in the district are Sachse, Rowlett, Rockwall, Poteet, Bishop Lynch and John Horn, Elizabeth Murdock, one of the bowling team sponsors, said.
Competing in this league is slightly different than the average recreational game of bowling.
“The two are different because there are strategies that the bowlers use to determine where they want their ball to go. If you look at each lane, you can see different ‘oil lines,’so you could then choose to use a speed-dominant roll or a rotation-dominant roll on each line,” Murdock said.
The teams win by earning points in five total games per match. Two games are in the American ten pin format, the format that most everyone plays when bowling, and three are in Baker format. Baker format is a modern method of scoring that focuses on team performance rather than individual performance.
“At the end of a game a team can earn or lose up to 15 points based on their individual performance and their combined performance in Baker format,” Murdock said. “SHS has won 75 points and lost 15 points. We are currently the number one team with the most wins and fewest lost points.”
Last year, Sachse went undefeated in regular season play and ended the season ranked in the top eight in the state of Texas. The team is hoping to go even further this year by making it to the state championships.
“We play a game every week for 10 weeks, and as of now we have won every week we’ve played,” Murdock said.
Several team members have a lot of experience since they started bowling when they were much younger.
“I joined the bowling team because I’ve been bowling since I was nine,” junior Zachary Howarth said. “Bowling’s a great thing to do for a hobby. I like bowling because it’s stress-free, and you can just have fun playing.”
Junior Brandon Ingram has been bowling since he was two-years-old.
“I love it, you know?” Ingram said. “When I play at Sachse, I can practice and focus on going to state and winning while also focusing on school and grades. That’s a big thing for me.”
The team’s next competition is against Bishop Lynch at noon on February 2, at Bowl-a-Rama in Rowlett.
