Sachse’s boys basketball team (5-13) last two games against the Rowlett Eagles and the North Garland Raiders have been cancelled because of COVID-19.

Due to the schedule changes because of COVID-19, Sachse has a tough eight game stretch spanning from Feb. 4 to Feb. 15.

“This is different than year’s past, even different from last year when we had this situation,” coach Zach Mikesell said. “It’s tough. We gotta be prepared to play multiple games, but we are prepared. We already played a lot of these teams once, so we are ready for that.”

The Mustangs last game was an upset 46-42 win against the Lakeview Centennial Patriots (11-12) on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

They currently have a 2-4 record in their first 6 district games

According to senior forward Kojo Sekeyre, Sachse’s struggle to score is due to inefficient shooting.

“We just gotta make our shots,” Sekyere said.  “We are losing these close games because we are missing easy shots.”

In recent games, Sachse has kept themselves in close games and lost by a very small margin. In Sachse’s last 4 losses, they lost by a margin of 6.5 points.

Sachse has shown promise though. This team has shown that they have the talent defensively to keep themselves in games, the Lakeview win and the close game against Wylie shows their ability to shut down teams.

The team still has hope they can make a late season playoff push, senior Micah Beard said.

“We are performing decently, but nowhere near our potential,” Beard said. “Last Tuesday’s win against Lakeview was much needed, and all we can do now is focus on what’s next.”

According to Coach Mikesell, the offense has been a big focus for the Mustangs as they look to turn things around.

“We have been doing a great job defensively most games,” Mikesell said. “We’ve had a couple games where our offense has looked a lot better, and I think that is shown in the last couple of games before this current stretch that we are in right now.”

“It is really about ball movement, trusting teammates, and hitting open shots. That is what every game is for us. I really believe that we are going to hit more open shots in this next stretch of games,” he said.
