New club ‘reels in’ fishing enthusiasts

One of the newest clubs on campus, the Fishing Club, is hoping to reel in new members. More than 50 students attended the first meeting in September.

Senior Jesus Sendejo was one of the students who had the idea of starting a Fishing Club. His grandfather first taught him to fish when he was eight years old. Sendejo said he believes that students should try it, as it might relieve the stress caused by schoolwork.

“Fishing is more than catching a fish,” Sendejo said. “When you cast your lure, you also cast away your worries. The things that you think about everyday just go away somehow.”

Junior Hunter Hall said the club officers are also planning to form a competitive team, making the club both competitive and recreational. They were planning to compete in Texas High School Bass Association tournaments this year, but since they missed the registration deadline, they can’t create a team until next year,

Sophomore Brayden Bowman said he wanted to join the club because he wanted to compete in THSBA tournaments.

“My father took me fishing when I was five years old,” Bowman said. “I soon started to get really interested and competitive in it. I like the passion and skill it takes to get good at it.”

The club officers invite anyone who wants to learn how to fish or already enjoys fishing to join the club. Club members are willing to teach people who don’t know how to fish and to help experienced anglers improve their skills.

“A lot of us know different fishing techniques,” Sendejo said, “so we will learn a lot from each other. We will be teaching each other, and we will help you even if you don’t know anything at all.”

The Fishing Club meets after school every other Monday in Room 114 to talk about projects and to plan activities. They also meet on Saturdays once a month to fish on nearby lakes.  When students join the club they receive a Google Classroom code where the monthly fishing outings and other information is posted.
